When Chilli Cheese Fries Attack

October 5, 2010

Last night we were running around like crazy going from work to meetings and later that night we decided before heading home to stop at a local diner and get something to eat.

I decided that at 12:00am I’m going to order chilli cheese fries now mind you mistake number one was ordering chilli cheese fries to begin with but I ordered them anyway at 12am I clearly wasn’t thinking clearly.

When I got the plate it was a mass of fries with 4 slices of hard plastic yellow cheese laid over it.  I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.  Does no one use real cheese anymore? or grated cheese or at least cheese whiz for God Sakes sliced plastic cheese should only be reserved for your kindergartener’s ham sandwiches.  But there it was my chilli cheese fries with a sheet of stiff hard cheese over the top.

Rob promptly asked is there even any chilli on that? So I began the dig and after rolling the cheese into a nice clump of garbage

To all restaurant chefs out there this is GROSS!

I found just the smallest amount of overly spiced chilli on the planet loaded with hard beans laid over the fries.   I moved the blob of un recognizable, hard, unmelted cheese to the side and figured ok, I’ll at least try the chilli and fries…. Yea uh wrong move… I promptly felt the horrible burning sensation that you get with heartburn.

Since I had surgery one of the issues I suffer most besides the vomiting is heartburn. I never experienced heartburn until a few weeks after surgery and now I take prilosec daily in order to keep it under control. Truth is however that sometimes even that doesn’t work  and to top that off anti acids can compromise your iron levels.   I’m not really sure why I suffer so much heart burn and it can be set off by anything even a simple piece of fruit.  The worst of the heartburn comes at night when I actually wake up choking on my stomach acids. NOT good for your throat, lungs and I’ve heard that can cause cancer so I definitely try never to eat stuff that will set me off. I have what is known as GERDs as a result of the surgery.   So I spent all night fighting my heartburn and woke up this morning with a sore pouch and throat.

One of the things you want to do if you’ve had surgery and are suffering heartburn is #1 go see your doctor and tell them to put you  on something.  Having regular acid reflux can cause the esophagus’ protection mechanism to malfunction and this condition is commonly referred to as Barrett’s esophagus which is a pre-cancerous condition.

Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which the color and composition of the cells lining your lower esophagus change, usually because of repeated exposure to stomach acid.  Barrett’s esophagus is most often diagnosed in people who have long-term gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — a chronic regurgitation of acid from the stomach into the lower esophagus. Only a small percentage of people with GERD will develop Barrett’s esophagus. – The Mayo Clinic

Also, when the acid is going into your lungs and causing you to choke it can scar your lung tissues.  Typically after a night of GERDs I wake up with full on asthma.

#2 Don’t eat late (that was my biggest mistake). Try to have your last meal at least 3 hours before bed time.  Don’t eat anything heavy or spicy and try to not have tomatoes or anything that’s too acidic.

#3 Elevate your bed I don’t have my bed elevated but I do sleep with 2 pillows to help me out.

#4 stay away from the booze, smoking, and over eating (yes even with surgery you can manage to over eat)

Most importantly is to see your doctor because it make no sense to suffer GERD if you can get it taken care of.

As a result of my fiery meal with fake plastic cheese laid over it I am on soft foods today. Eating things like yogurt and soup.   Lesson learned on top of the gross factor of the cheese and I love cheese the entire meal was a bad choice from the get go.

Not Yummy.. No No... oh No..

Actually I don’t think that meal is a wise choice even for someone without surgery.  Needless to say I won’t be eating chilli cheese fries for some time to come.

I know that Chili Cheese Fries are horrible for you but if you want good chili cheese fries, go to Benny’s by the Ridgeway Shopping Center. They are excellent and they do not use cheese slices and they are generous with the chili which has an excellent kick to it!

I’ll have to try them when I get brave enough… unfortunately I think those chilli fries are kicking my butt a week later. 🙂
